Mesh Coffee, Seoul — Vinyl, Single-Origin, and the Smoothest Americano
Share
There's a pocket of Seoul called Seongsu-dong that people have started calling the Brooklyn of the city — old brick workshops and shoe factories reborn as roasteries, galleries, and coffee bars. A few steps from Seoul Forest, tucked at 43 Seoulsup-gil, I found Mesh Coffee. I'm glad I did.
The room tells you everything before you even order. Warm wood everywhere, a shelf of vinyl records beside the brew bar, a fern leaning over a turntable, gooseneck kettles and ceramic drippers lined up like tools that actually get used. It's the kind of place that's serious about coffee without being precious about it. You can tell the people here love the craft.

I'm a bit of a purist. I drink my coffee black, and I don't like much getting in the way of it — so when I order an Americano, the coffee has nowhere to hide. I had theirs pulled from the Nane Challa, a single-origin Ethiopian, and it might be one of the best I've had anywhere.
Smooth. Genuinely smooth — roasty and citrusy, with that bright peaberry character, and not a single shred of bitterness anywhere in it. The kind of cup that makes you slow down and actually pay attention. I liked it enough that I bought a bag of the beans to bring home (it may just turn up on the Passport Shelf… if I can bear to part with it).

My girlfriend ordered the iced caramel macchiato, and here's what won me over on a drink I'd never order for myself: it was subtle. The sweetness was restrained — present, but quiet, letting the coffee still be coffee. As someone who usually finds caramel drinks cloying, I genuinely appreciated how carefully it was balanced. It was, simply, delicious.

That balance is the whole story of Mesh, really. A place that can make a black-coffee purist and a caramel-macchiato drinker equally happy is a place that knows exactly what it's doing. If you find yourself in Seongsu-dong, go. Order something. Stay for a record.
First stamp in the Coffee Passport — and a high bar for the next one.
